The form and where to apply
Individuals use Form PAN CR-01, and others PAN CR-02. On Protean's online application, choose Changes or Correction in existing PAN Data; on UTIITSL, Apply for Changes/Correction in PAN Data. UTIITSL says the old change request forms were not accepted after 31 March 2026, and that holders of an Instant e-PAN can apply for a change on its site through e-KYC.

What you can change
Form CR-01 covers your name, gender, date of birth, address, passport number, contact details, your father's and mother's names, and which parent's name is printed on the card, among other fields. You also give a photo and signature. The form says the name as per Aadhaar is printed on the PAN card, and that a married woman gives her father's name, not her husband's.

Proof for a name change
Protean treats a spelling fix or an expanded initial as a marginal correction, backed by an identity proof showing the correct name. A real change of name needs proof of it: after marriage, a marriage certificate or invitation card, a gazette notification, a gazetted officer's certificate or a passport showing the husband's name; for anyone else, a gazette notification or a gazetted officer's certificate.

Correcting your date of birth
Protean asks for a document from a competent authority showing the correct date, such as a passport, driving licence, voter ID, matriculation certificate or mark sheet, or a marriage certificate from the Registrar of Marriages. Aadhaar is not accepted as proof of date of birth, by Protean or UTIITSL.

Paperless or posted
Applying with Aadhaar e-KYC and e-Sign, or a digital signature, is paperless: nothing is posted, though e-Sign costs Rs 5.90 more. In physical mode, Protean wants your documents within 15 days at its PAN Services Unit in Baner, Pune, with your 15-digit acknowledgement number on the envelope. UTIITSL takes printed forms at its offices.

Changing only your address? It is free
If your PAN is linked with your Aadhaar, Protean's Address Update Facility and UTIITSL's address update copy the address from your Aadhaar to your PAN record for free, with an OTP to the mobile or email registered in Aadhaar. Protean says it also updates the mobile and email you confirm. Your Aadhaar address must be right first: see Aadhaar address update.

After you apply
Protean says it normally takes two weeks to process a correct application and send the card. For a change request, the card is printed after the Income Tax Department confirms the update. The new card has the same PAN and comes to your communication address, with an e-PAN by email if you gave one. You can track the status with your acknowledgement number.

Keep the corrected copy
When the new card comes, scan it into DigiSafe: the number reader copies your PAN, and the scan is encrypted on your phone. DigiSafe is a private app, not connected with the Income Tax Department, Protean or UTIITSL, and free today, with no ads.
