Where you check your PAN status depends on where you applied: Protean, UTIITSL or the Income Tax e-filing site's Instant e-PAN. Here is what each one asks for, and who to call if your card is late.

Applied through Protean? Enter your 15-digit acknowledgement number on its Track PAN status page. Through UTIITSL? Use its Track PAN Card page with your application or coupon number, or your PAN, and your date of birth. For an Instant e-PAN, use Check Status / Download e-PAN on the e-filing site with your Aadhaar and an OTP.

On Protean's Track PAN status page, choose PAN - New / Change Request and enter the 15-digit acknowledgement number from your application. Protean says tracking works from three days after you apply. The page has no search by name and date of birth. You can also send PTNPAN, a space and the acknowledgement number by SMS to 57575.

UTIITSL: coupon number or PAN

UTIITSL's Track PAN Card page takes your application or coupon number, or your 10-character PAN, together with your date of birth and a captcha.

Instant e-PAN from the Income Tax site

If you got your PAN through Instant e-PAN, open Instant e-PAN under Quick Links on the e-filing site, choose Check Status / Download e-PAN, and enter your 12-digit Aadhaar and the OTP. This only covers Instant e-PAN, not applications made through Protean or UTIITSL. See download your e-PAN for the full steps.

Check that a PAN is active

The e-filing site's Verify PAN Status checks your PAN against your full name, date of birth and a mobile number, with a 6-digit OTP, and tells you whether the details are correct and the PAN is active. It allows up to 5 PANs a day from one mobile number. Not linked with Aadhaar yet? See link PAN with Aadhaar.

How long it takes

Protean says it normally takes two weeks to process a correct application and send the card, and, in its FAQ for new PANs, about 15 working days. We found no processing time on UTIITSL's pages, and no list on either site of what each status message means, so if a status is unclear, ask the helpline.

Can I check PAN status by name and date of birth?+

No. Protean asks only for the 15-digit acknowledgement number. UTIITSL asks for your coupon number or your PAN, with your date of birth.
