The 2027 dates
NTA's bulletin lists Session 1 applications from 24 October to 22 November 2026, up to 11:50 pm, with a late window from 23 to 26 November at Rs 500 extra and corrections from 27 to 29 November. Session 1 exams are on 20 to 24 and 28 January 2027. Session 2 applications run from 5 January to 3 February 2027, with exams from 2 to 7 April. Dates can change, so check NTA's JEE Main site.

The photo: size in KB, not pixels
NTA asks for a recent colour passport-size photo with "80% face (including ears, without a mask)" against a white background, as a JPG or JPEG of 10 to 200 KB. The bulletin gives no pixel or centimetre size, so the KB range is the rule to meet. The free passport photo maker crops a photo to 3.5 x 4.5 cm; our test gave a 413 x 531 pixel JPG of about 48 KB, inside the range.

The live photo
During the form NTA also captures a live photo, against a white background with proper lighting and 80% of your face visible, ears included and without a mask. If your computer has no webcam, the form shows a QR code so you can take it on a phone.

The signature: 10 to 100 KB
NTA sets no ink colour; signing in dark ink on plain white paper keeps it clearly legible, as NTA asks. Photograph or scan it and crop to the signature. Use the free signature resize tool set to 100 KB or less. If the file comes out under 10 KB, raise it just over the floor with increase image size.

PDFs have a floor too: 50 KB
Every PDF must be between 50 and 300 KB. A large scan is easy to fix with compress PDF to 300 KB; a tiny one under 50 KB is not, so scan it again at higher quality or in colour. Turning a photo of your marksheet into a PDF? Image to PDF can cap it under 200 KB in one step.

Starting a fresh form
NTA's clarification of 30 October 2026 lets candidates submit a fresh application, and says every detail, including the photograph, signature and documents, must be entered and uploaded again. Keep your final files where you can find them.
