Every state applies the same federal minimum: proof of your full legal name and date of birth, your Social Security number, two proofs of your home address, and lawful status. What follows is what this state adds.

A real moment

“You moved to Texas last month. Your new electric bill arrived, but your second proof is a gas bill from the same company, and you are not sure it counts.”

Texas DPS asks for two printed documents with your name and home address, one of them showing you have lived in Texas for at least 30 days. Printed electronic statements are fine, but many documents must be dated within 180 days. Texas has issued REAL ID cards since 10 October 2016.

Two documents, one showing 30 days

Texas DPS asks for two printed documents with your name and home address. One of them must show you have lived in Texas for at least 30 days. This rule applies to every Texas driver licence and ID card, not only REAL ID.

Same company, different services

Two bills from the same company count only if they are for different services. A water bill and a gas bill from the same city utility, on separate statements, are fine. Two months of the same bill are not.
