Every state applies the same federal minimum: proof of your full legal name and date of birth, your Social Security number, two proofs of your home address, and lawful status. What follows is what this state adds.

A real moment

“You booked the DMV online and the form asks you to upload two proofs of address. The lease is in your parent's name, and the only bill in yours goes to a P.O. Box.”

California asks for an identity document, your Social Security number, and two different printed documents showing your California mailing address in your first and last name. Copies of the address proofs are accepted. Upload them with your online application, then bring the originals to your appointment.

Two printed proofs of address

The California DMV wants two different printed documents with your California mailing address. Both must show your first and last name and the same address as your REAL ID application. A home utility or mobile phone bill is the DMV's preferred proof.

P.O. Boxes and someone else's name

If you use a P.O. Box, one document must show both the box and your home address. If no address document is in your name, a birth certificate, marriage licence or domestic partner certificate can show your link to the person named on it.

Upload online, bring the originals

During the online application, the DMV asks you to upload your identity and residency documents. Bring the same originals to your appointment. The DMV may later post a letter asking you to confirm your address; signing and returning it counts as an extra residency document.
